David Martin has shown his appreciation for West Ham United supporters after their 1-0 win over Southampton, as reported by the club’s official channels.
What did he say?
Watching the victory on Saturday, it felt as though there was a constant loop of one chant playing in the background: “We’ve got a chance, Martin’s in goal!”
It highlighted just how popular the 33-year-old has become at his boyhood club, during a game where he kept his second clean sheet from four Premier League matches.

Following the match, he showed his appreciation for the support received from the travelling fans:
“We’ve not had a good time recently but we needed them today and they got us through it. At the end, I could hear them drawing us forward and they made such a difference and I’m so proud to have played in front of them.

“For me, personally, it’s an unbelievable feeling playing in front of people I know and from my area. I need to go and get my hair cut and I meet West Ham supporters so it’s nice going into those places after a result like that!
“It means the world to me, it really does. The lift it gives me personally and for all the lads, you can feel the vibe around the place and it’s a great feeling.”
A two-way street
It is clear how thankful Martin is to be able to play in front of those fans and have them backing him, but the feeling of gratitude is reciprocated.

Martin has come in and helped to steady the ship with his presence and the two clean sheets he has managed to keep so far.
He has given them something even more than safety between the sticks though, with the 33-year-old acting as somebody who can unite the club, through showing how much he cares.
