As quoted by Sky Sports, Mauricio Pochettino has admitted he doesn’t believe his current Tottenham squad is the best he has had.
What did he say?
After two consecutive transfer windows without signing a single player, the Lilywhites splashed the cash this summer by bringing in the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, Ryan Sessegnon and Jack Clarke.
Aside from incomings, Spurs also retained the services of important first-team players like Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld, despite the speculation regarding their futures at the club.
However, Pochettino has now insisted he still does not believe this is the best squad at his disposal.

He said: “We will see at the end of the season. At the moment I don’t believe this is the best squad. But I think if you only see the results, playing in the final of the Champions League, it’s easy to say the better squad was last season’s squad because we got to the final.
“We will see if we can repeat, or if we win some trophy maybe we can talk about this being the best squad.”
No excuses
Make no mistake, after the impressive summer Spurs have enjoyed in terms of their transfer dealings, the pressure is well and truly on Pochettino to deliver tangible success. The north London side kept hold of all the players they wanted and needed to keep, and strengthened in key areas, while they now have a permanent home after their spell at Wembley.
Spurs’ run to the Champions League final felt like a fairy-tale last season, but there needs to be a cold dose of reality for this current campaign. Another top-four finish would simply be deemed as a lack of progression, particularly after the amount of money that has been spent – over £100m – and that run in Europe.
Whilst Pochettino may be playing down the state of his current squad, the tools are all in place for a successful season – especially considering a number of their big six rivals, namely Chelsea, Manchester United and arguably Arsenal, are in transition right now.
Blaming the ability of his squad, which is arguably stronger than last term’s due to Lo Celso and Ndombele in particular, won’t quite cut it at the end of the campaign.
