Legendary former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has told his old club to sell Paul Pogba if he isn’t happy at the club, according to TalkSport.
Keeping unhappy players around a football club is generally a recipe for disaster, but so is selling those who have the ability to be world-class game-changers.
What’s the story, then?
Scholes has not been bowled over by Pogba’s performances in the 2017/18 season, declaring them ‘just OK’ as United finished the campaign without a trophy and failing to mount a serious title challenge.
He went on to say that he hopes Pogba improves and shows more of the form that earned him the big-money return to United from Juventus but also stated that he would let him go if he’s not happy at the club.
Keep a man who could be a lynchpin?
Despite their constant heavy spending, United have found themselves in a position where they still lack a great deal of world-class players and Pogba is one of the few who has that talent.
He does not show it on a regular enough basis at present but there is a logical school of thought that dictates selling your best players is not a particularly strong transfer policy.
Sell an unsettled player?
The other side of the coin is that for a huge club like United, who could attract so many players across the globe, keeping an unhappy player makes no sense and could have a detrimental effect on the dressing room.
Scholes’ words stem from an age when every top player wanted to play for United and from respect for a fanbase who have become used to that.
