BBC journalist Tom English has felt the wrath of the Rangers supporters after he criticised a supporters’ group’s response to the events that preceded Steven Gerrard’s side’s dramatic 2-1 win over Kilmarnock.
Connor Goldson’s last-minute winner gave Gerrard’s men all three points on the opening day of the season. Scott Arfield had opened the scoring but Stephen O’Donnell levelled the game deep into the second half before the Gers centre-back evoked a small pitch invasion from the away support.
The game has been somewhat marred by the events that followed the winner and, in this case, the scenes just as the game kicked off.
Many Rangers fans were left stuck outside Rugby Park due disorganised policing and stadium entry. They burst through a fire-exit to avoid a crush, after turnstile issues left them waiting outside as the game drew closer.
This incident has led to Club 1872, the second-largest shareholders in Rangers, releasing a statement, defending the actions of the supporters, something English didn’t appreciate, calling the fan response “execrable”.
The fans took to Twitter to lambast the journalist for his comments on the dangerous situation:
