Newcastle United have officially confirmed that Salomon Rondon will miss Saturday’s Premier League clash with Leicester City as the club try to ascertain the severity of the thigh injury he picked up last time out against Crystal Palace.
The Venezuelan joined the Magpies in the summer as part of a loan-swap deal that saw Dwight Gayle go in the opposite direction to West Brom.
Gayle was one of the Premier League side’s top goalscorers last season but was deemed to be expendable in the cause of bringing Rondon to St James’ Park.

However, things have not started well for the 29-year-old in the North East. Beyond this injury blow, he has not impressed so far on Tyneside and is yet to get off the mark in the Premier League this season.
Rafa Benitez may now be regretting the swap deal he sanctioned in the summer, especially considering Gayle’s impressive start to life at the Hawthorns. Certainly, Newcastle would be in a far more comfortable situation now if they’d kept the 28-year-old at the club, and it could prove their undoing in the quest for top flight survival.
What do you think, Newcastle fans – was loaning out Gayle a bad move that you’ll come to regret?
