manager Alan Pardew has move to dispel rumours that Yohan Cabaye could be set to leave St James’ Park in January.
The French midfielder has been heavily linked with Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham in recent weeks, with the player himself believed to be keen to move on in search of Champions League football.
The Magpies value their man highly, and have rebuffed advances from the Gunners in the past.
Cabaye recently hinted at a possible move while away on international duty, but Pardew believes that reports that the playmaker is desperate to leave Tyneside are wide of the mark, and that he can achieve his aims with Newcastle:
“Sometimes you know when they are abroad they get asked questions that are slightly loaded, that have slightly different connotations to them,” he is quoted by Sky Sports.
“But if you were to ask me if I wanted to play in the Champions League, then I would tell you ‘absolutely, yes’.
“And that’s what Yohan wants to do, of course he does. But we want him to do that here. We are trying to build that but it is difficult and it’s only players like Yohan Cabaye that are going to get us there.”
Another Newcastle player thought to be looking to move on is Fabricio Coloccini.
The Argentine is thought to be looking to return to his homeland to sign for San Lorenzo, but Pardew was equally dismissive about suggestions that his defender will be moving on:
“As far as Colo is concerned, he is our captain and it is well documented that last year the pangs of home were pulling on him.
“But he’s a professional, a professional player here he’s been brilliant for us. The only reason I am commenting now is just to let our fans know there is no big deal.”
Can Newcastle really keep Fabricio Coloccini and Yohan Cabaye?
